An Indian Hills eighth grader’s infectious optimism has earned her the school’s highest student honor.
Administrators and teachers voted Lucy Hoffman, daughter of Kurt and Susan Hoffman, this year’s Wally Foundation “Community Builder” Award winner.
Earlier this year, Hoffman and her friend Parker Gordon started the Indian Hills Happy Club, a group that meets a couple times a month to make posters with positive messages to display throughout the halls.
“We just thought it would be cool if kindness was more visible in the school,” Lucy said.
Her father said he and his wife were elated to hear the news that she’d received the honor.
“That Lucy is viewed by her teachers and administrators as being kind and building the community and helping her peers was really neat,” he said. “We have always valued kindness and helping out other people. But you don’t know what your kid is doing when they’re not at your house, so to hear she was getting recognized for kindness was really great.”
Indian Hills Principal Scott Sherman said Lucy is “an all around great student and person.”
“She have a positive outlook that is contagious to those around her,” he said.
The school will make a $500 donation to the Love Fund, which provides financial support for a number of student needs throughout the year, in Hoffman’s honor.
