The Mission carnival will open tonight if the weather cooperates for a four-day run that represents a change from the city’s festival lineup in years past.

Carnival-PosterPreviously, the carnival weekend was associated with the Mission Family Festival that included a number of activities, including a parade down Johnson Drive. The parade did not occur in 2014 because of the Johnson Drive rebuild.

The other parts of the festival, including a pancake breakfast, children’s activities and food tents also were eliminated this year while Mission re-thinks its festival lineup and the activities for the events.

The carnival this year will be back in the parking lot north of the Sylvester Powell Community Center which is off Beverly between Johnson Drive and Martway. The city’s lease on that parking lot expired earlier this year and was not renewed by Waddell and Reed which owns the lot and the building on Johnson Drive immediately to the north of the parking area. The company is remodeling the building to occupy for its use. City staff said the company cooperated with the city and allowed the lot to be used again because the construction is still ongoing and it is not ready for occupancy.

The carnival will run from 6 to 10 p.m. tonight and 6 to 11 p.m. on Friday. It will open at noon on Saturday and Sunday. The carnival closes at 4 p.m. Sunday with the Ferris wheel closing at 3 p.m. The carnival will be selling $22 wristbands for multiple rides.
