SM East on Wednesday awarded two senior athletes with one of the school’s most prestigious honors.
Emma Braasch and Sam Huffman are the 2015 Newcomer Scholarship winners.
Named after longtime SM East athletic director Dr. Art Newcomer, the $1,000 scholarships go to student athletes who excel both on and off the field. The selection committee considers length of involvement and success in athletics as well as community involvement, grade point average and responses to essay questions.
In addition to her participation in soccer, basketball and tennis, Braasch is involved in Link Crew, Pep Club, the Upper Room volunteer program, DECA and SHARE. She was the varsity captain of the basketball team this season and is a three-year basketball letter winner. She was a four-year letter winner in soccer, and named to the All Sunflower Second Team in 2014. She has a 4.07 GPA. She is the daughter of Craig and Christine Braasch.
Huffman, who scored the dramatic double-overtime conversion against Olathe North that propelled SM East to the state title game against Hutchinson this past fall, is a three-year letter winner in football who has earned honorable mention in both All-State and All-Sunflower lists. He is also a three-year letter winner on the Lancer lacrosse team, where he is currently a team captain. Huffman is involved in National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society, Link Crew and the Athletics Advisory Committee. He has a GPA of 4.514. Huffman is the son of Mary Sinclair and Doug Huffman.
Recent Newcomer Award winners include: James McDonald and Jessica Young (2014); Jack Sernett and Grace Pickell (2013); and Andy Hiett and Toni Aguiar (2012).
