It is a busy weekend around northeast Johnson County and much of that has to do with the annual Arbor Day celebrations that several cities will observe today and Saturday.

Arbor Day, a tree-planting holiday that dates back to April 10, 1872 with its start in Nebraska, is now observed — still with a tree planting — on various days of the spring. At least one Arbor Day celebration takes place later this morning in Mission. Roeland Park and Prairie Village will follow with events on Saturday.

In Mission this morning there will be a tree planting ceremony and tree trivia at at Waterworks Park with Rushton Elementary students and the Mission Tree Board. That event starts at 11:30 a.m.

In Prairie Village The Arbor Day event will start at 9 a.m. Saturday in Porter Park and will be in honor of Jack Lewis. Lewis served on the tree board for 14 years and is an active member of the Prairie Fields Homes Association.

In Roeland Park, it’s more than just an Arbor Day celebration Saturday. Arbor Day is being combined with a celebration of Earth Day and New Tree Day. It runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in R Park and will include prizes, seedlings, snacks, recycling opportunities, a bicycle course, and presentations on attracting bees and butterflies, raising hens or building a rain garden.

Roeland Park is also celebrating the addition of 20 trees to the park with 20 different species that were planted this week. They are all shade trees and have been planted to shade the new walking path. The new trees were supported in part by a grant from the Sunflower Foundation. Signage also will be added next month as part of the grant. R Park had approximately 40 ash trees removed after the Emerald Ash Borer was found in the park.

Arbor Day isn’t the only draw this weekend. Some other events:

  • The Fairway City Hall parking lot at 4210 Shawnee Mission Parkway will be the site of a community paper shredding and electronics recycling event from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday.
