
A 15-year-old female was struck by a tanker truck this morning on Metcalf Avenue just south of 61st Street. Mission police said the girl was alert and speaking when first responders arrived on the scene.
Mission Police detective Dan Madden said Mission police received a report at 7:53 a.m. this morning that a female was seen walking along the roadway in the shoulder of Metcalf. When police arrived, the girl had been struck by the tanker traveling in the northbound lane.
Det. Madden said the driver of the truck had seen the girl enter the roadway and was able to slow considerably before the impact. Madden said police believe the girl is a student at SM North which is not far from the accident site.
Mission, Fairway and Overland Park police were all on the scene of the accident this morning which is also slightly north of Shawnee Mission Parkway.
Northbound traffic on Metcalf was being diverted from the road and only one lane of southbound traffic was open on Metcalf. Overland Park Fire and Rescue also was on the scene.
One car, a black Ford Fusion was in the ditch with its door open, but was identified as belonging to a witness to the accident.
