Shawnee Mission Health staff celebrate National Walking Day. Staff at Shawnee Mission Health paraded around the Merriam medical campus Wednesday as part of the American Heart Association’s National Walking Day. Around 50 employees took advantage of the excellent weather over the lunch break for the healthful celebration.

Sophomore’s hit lifts Lancers to season opening win in 10. SM East junior phenom Joey Wentz pitched eight shutout innings in the Lancer baseball team’s season opener against highly ranked Blue Valley Wednesday. But it was sophomore Luke Anderson’s clutch hit in the 10th inning that drove in the winning run — the only score in a night marked by a pitchers’ duel. SM East will look to stay perfect on the year against Sunflower League rival SM Northwest Friday at 3&2 Stadium in Lenexa. The Lancers then face SM South at 3&2 Saturday.

Lancers finish fifth in first golf tourney of the year. SM East’s golf team got off to a bit of a slow start Wednesday in the SM South Invitational, the first golf tournament of the year. The defending state champions finished fifth after their rounds at Deer Creek behind Olathe Northwest, SM Northwest, Lawrence Free State and Olathe East. SM East’s Max Maday had the best day on the course for the Lancers, finishing tied for tenth in the individual standings with an 86.

Nall park maintenance actions approved. The Roeland Park City Council this week approved a number of deferred maintenance items to begin upgrading Nall Park. The list includes $9,880 worth of work that will be done by the public works department and outside contractors. It encompasses a new fence, new trash cans and lots of repainting among other efforts. The council earlier this month approved a deferred maintenance list of more than $50,000 for the community center.

SM North chess team medals at state. The SM North chess team sent eight students to state competition and three – Matthew Webb, Jacob Swearingen and Ben Harrison – won medals. Webb received third place in his division of 137 players, one win away from a first place tie.

Fairway pool memberships discounted. With a new pool on the way, Fairway annual memberships will be going up by $10. The annual pool membership can be purchased at 2014 rates through the month of April. Construction continues to get the pool ready for the summer season.
