In Wednesday’s state-opening game against Derby, it was SM North that got off to the slow start only to recover for a comfortable win. On Friday, the Indians found themselves on the other side of that equation.
SM North jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter only to see rival Lawrence respond with 17 unanswered points, jumping out to a lead they would never give up. Led by guard Justin Roberts, who scored 27 on the night, Lawrence would eliminate SM North from the state tournament with a 78-64 victory.
Anthony Roberts scored 20 points for the Lions.
SM North was once again led by twins Marcus and Michael Weathers, who combined for 49 points on the night.
Lawrence advances to play top-seeded Wichita East in the 6A title game this evening.
The loss brings a breakout season for SM North to a close — but Indians fans can take comfort in the fact that all but two of this year’s varsity players will be back next year, and with the experience of playing on the big stage of the state tournament under their belts. Friday’s game at the Charles Koch Arena in Wichita marked the end of their high school basketball careers for seniors Torrence Allen and Nick Perez. But the Weathers brothers will be back next year for their senior season.
After a loss in Saturday’s consolation game, SM North finishes the year 16-9. The Indians had gone on a five-game winning streak before the loss to Lawrence.
Friday also saw the end of the line for Bishop Miege’s boys team which lost its Class 4A-Division 1 semifinal game to McPherson, 79-68.
