Changes coming to the middle school schedule in Shawnee Mission district next year

Families enrolling students at Indian Hills and other northeast Johnson County public schools this summer will be paying less for textbook rental.
Middle school students at Indian Hills will see changes to the school day starting with the next school year.

Changes are coming to the middle school curriculum in the Shawnee Mission School District next school year.

Parents and staff at the middle schools were advised of the changes last week that will reduce the number of class periods from eight to seven, although the school day start and end times will remain the same. Each of the class periods will be seven minutes longer.

Communications will no longer be a separate class for middle school students, but will be folded into the language arts curriculum. Study hall also is being dropped from the daily schedule which will open up another option for an elective class for students.

Physical education also is changing. It will still be a required class for middle school, but will only be a one-semester class for seventh and eighth graders.

According to the district, no changes are planned at other grade levels.
