When SM East’s dance team takes the stage tomorrow morning for the first of their two preliminary performances at National Dance Alliance National Championships in Orlando, there are sure to be some jitters. But head coach Alexis Bugler knows her team will be able to settle in quickly.
With 10 seniors among the 21-girl dance team, there’s a lot of experience performing in high-stakes situations.
“The girls have been there, they’ve seen it before,” she said. “Knowing that we’re going in with those seniors and the wisdom they have, I’m excited about seeing what they do this year.”
The Lancer Dancers have become a fixture at the national competition, which features top dance teams from across the country, over the past years. In 2013, the squad won the jazz division. Last year they finished in the top ten in both jazz and hip hop.
The scheduling of this year’s performances will make for an early day for the dancers Saturday. The team is set to give one of the first performances in the jazz category Saturday morning, meaning many will have to wake at 4 a.m. to start going through hair and makeup. They’ll likely head back to their hotel rooms to try to catch a nap before they have to get up for another round of costume preparation before their afternoon hip hop preliminary. Should the team score high enough Saturday, they’d advance to the finals round on Sunday.
