SM East sending bowling team to state. SM East’s boys bowling team has for just the second time in school history earned a berth in the state tournament. With a third place finish at the SM South High School Regional at AMF College Lanes Feb. 24-26, the Lancers earned the right to compete as a team at this weekend’s state meet, which will be held at Northrock Lanes in Wichita.

SM East, SM North boys prevail in sub-state openers. SM East’s boys basketball team didn’t have any trouble rebounding from a 55-39 loss at the hands of SM South in their final game of the season. In fact, the Lancers played neck-and-neck with the Raiders in the SM South gym Wednesday to open sub-state play, and eked out a one-point win to advance to the sub-state final against top-seeded Lawrence, 19-1 on the season. SM North made short work of its sub-state opener opponent, beating Lawrence Free-State 50-26. The Indians will take on SM West at 7 p.m. Friday in the sub-state final. SM East will travel to Lawrence to play the Lions at 7 p.m. Friday. The girls sub-state openers take place tonight.

Prairie Village opens two new recreation programs. Prairie Village Parks and Recreation has opened registration for two new programs, Skateboarding 101 and pickleball. The skateboarding program will be taught by Dan Mapes of Dan’s Sk8 School and is open to kids 3-12. The city is also opening two leagues for pickleball, a combination of ping pong, tennis and badminton which is one of the fastest growing sports in the country. Lockton Lane closure to begin Friday in Fairway. Construction crews will begin the final stages of a storm water project in Fairway Friday that will require the closure of Lockton Lane in the 5900 block. The street will be closed to through traffic for five to seven days.

New Mission pool gets more pool pass visits. The number of super pool pass visits from other cities to the new Mission Family Aquatic Center, which opened for the 2014 pool season, shot up from 573 in 2013 to 2,333 last year. The old pool at its peak had generated 1,000 visits from other cities in 2012. The attraction of the new pool also generated more money for Mission in the pool pass program that involves several cities in northeast Johnson County. Mission collected more than $6,000 for the 2014 season in the pass program, up from $3,900 in 2013.

Drop off items this weekend for SHARE garage sale. The SM East SHARE garage sale is being held as the SHARE 3R sale (recycling, reusing and repurposing) in conjunction with the Prairie Village Earth Fair this year. Donated items can be dropped off from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Donations will be accepted in the SM East main parking lot.
