Before a lively crowd of fellow students, parents, coaches and teachers Wednesday, SM East recognized nine seniors who have committed to play sports at the college level.
The National Signing Day participants were:
Kyle Ball: Football at Kansas State University
Ball’s high school honors included making 1st Team All State twice, and being named Sunflower League Player of the year as a junior. His favorite SM East memory was beating Olathe North in double overtime to advance to this year’s state title game.
Elizabeth Barnickel: Tennis at Air Force Academy
Barnickel won the 6A Kansas singles title in 2014 and was part of the Lancers’ state championship teams all four years of her high school career. Her favorite memory from her time as a Lancer was taking this past season’s singles title.
Emma Braasch: Soccer at Creighton University
In addition to her skills on the pitch, Braasch is the current captain of the varsity girls basketball team and was letter winner in tennis her freshman year. Her favorite SM East memory was scoring the winning goal in last year’s Senior Day game against SM West.
Barrett Cooper: Tennis at Colorado Christian University
During his high school years, Cooper was a standout wrestler as well as tennis player. He qualified for the state wrestling tournament his freshman and sophomore years. He also took third place in Team Tennis Nationals. His favorite SM East memory was pinning the fourth-ranked wrestler in the state as a freshman.
Rilye Fries: Swimming at the University of Nebraska
At SM East, Fries qualified for nationals in the 200 butterfly and the 400 IM. Her favorite memory from her sporting high school years was traveling to Irvine, Cal., to compete in Junior Nationals.
Rachel Haskell: Rowing at Kansas State University
She’ll be working on the water in college, but Haskell earned letters in high school for basketball, track and field and volleyball.
Shelby Harvey: Softball at Ottawa University
Harvey was a four-year letter winner for the Lancers softball squad and was named team MVP. Her favorite SM East memory was winning regionals her freshman year and playing at state.
Devin Price: Football at Baker University
Price made the All-Sunflower League Second Team as an offensive lineman as a junior and received an honorable mention this past year. His favorite SM East memory was helping the team win its first-ever state title in November.
Jennifer Young: Lacrosse at the Illinois Institute of Technology
In addition to her skills on the lacrosse field, Young was a four year letter winning on the tennis team. She was the Lancers lacrosse goalie for three years and this past season’s team MVP. A come from behind win over Lee’s Summit West was her favorite high school memory.
