127 Shawnee Mission teachers already taking early retirement incentive; deadline next week

SM North will be losing at least six teachers to retirement at the end of the year. Already 127 Shawnee Mission district employees have announced plans to retire in the wake of an early retirement incentive package.

By Dawn Bormann

A whopping 127 Shawnee Mission School District employees have already accepted the financial incentive to retire, Superintendent Jim Hinson said Monday.

“And there’s going to be more,” he said.

Eligible employees have until Feb. 2 to make the irrevocable decision. Those who accept will receive a financial reward that equals 60 percent of their base salary. The incentive is paid out in annual installments during a five-year period beginning in September. It does not include survivor benefits. Teachers cannot be rehired by the district, but they would be eligible to serve as a substitute teacher.

About 300 teachers alone qualify for the buyout, which is also available to some administrators. The incentive is designed to help the district save money with wages. Many veteran teachers are at the top of the pay scale but new teachers can be hired with a starting salary of $41,000.

Hinson said Monday that some of the administrative positions won’t be filled. He announced a new organizational chart that would reduce the administrative support positions and move employees back to the classroom. The move will save $1.5 million annually and allow the district to decrease class sizes – something that patrons have requested.

Employees must have at least 10 years of service with Shawnee Mission and be eligible for retirement under the state public employees retirement plan
