Some smoldering ashes set out with the trash caused a garbage truck fire today that forced the Deffenbaugh crew to dump the entirety of the truck’s contents in the Franklin Park parking lot.

Crews from Consolidated Fire District No. 2 were on the scene early Monday afternoon to extinguish the flames on the mound of garbage that rose several feet high. Prairie Village Police had the park parking lot blocked off as they waited for Deffenbaugh personnel to arrive and begin cleanup.

The driver noticed the smoke as he was coming down Roe Avenue after having wrapped up collections along 85th Street.

CFD2 Chief Tony Lopez said the trash truck’s response was nothing out of the ordinary in response to a fire.

“That’s standard operating procedure for the trash companies to do when they have fire on board,” he said.
