You may have noticed that we’ve been writing a lot lately about the post-season honors that keeping rolling in for this year’s SM East football team, undefeated as it was.
Well, perhaps the biggest honor yet came in for the Lancers Monday.
MaxPreps, the division of CBSSports.com that covers high school athletics across the country, announced that SM East would be one of the 50 teams it honors on its Tour of Champions. “This exclusive honor is reserved for only 50 of the best teams in the entire country,” read the announcement from MaxPreps. “Given the fact that nearly 17,000 varsity teams compete, that puts the Lancers in the top one-fifth of one percent of teams in the country!”
To be eligible for the honor, teams had to win a state title and be nationally ranked. The Lancers finished the season 126th in the country in MaxPreps’ rankings.
SM East head football coach said the team was ecstatic to get the news.
“We were very honored and excited. We’ve won a lot of awards this year — but to be a top 50 team in the nation, that’s a big one,” he said.
Delaney said the fact that two Kansas teams — Wichita’s Bishop Carroll and SM East — have been named to the list bodes well for Kansas high school football as a whole.
“I think it just shows you where Kansas football is going,” he said. “It’s getting better every year. It used to be that people didn’t think high school football here was that strong, but this shows you that we do have strong teams at a national level.”
SM East will receive the honor during a halftime presentation at the SM East boys basketball game against SM West on Friday, Jan. 16.
