Looking for family activities to stay busy during the holiday break?

Several northeast Johnson County cities and county agencies offer special programming to accommodate residents of all ages during the break.

The activities include:

Open Swim: The Sylvester Powell, Jr. Community Center has expanded its open swim to start at 1:30 p.m.on weekdays through Jan. 5. Open swim ends 30 minutes before the facility closes. The community center is closed New Year’s Day.

The Roeland Park Aquatic Center has open swim for all ages from noon to 4 .m. Monday, Tuesday and Friday and noon to 3 p.m. Wednesday. The facility is closed New Year’s Day.

Pickle Ball: All ages are welcome to play pickle ball from 12:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. weekdays and 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Sylvester Powell, Jr. Community Center. The center is closed New Year’s Day.

Indoor playground: Children ages birth to six can play on riding toys, jump on inflatables and play with dozens of toys during the indoor playground from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at the Sylvester Powell, Jr. Community Center.

Ukulele Lessons: You don’t need to own a ukulele to join the Teen Ukulele Workshop from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Central Resource Library. The program is designed for all skill levels between the ages of 12 and 18. The workshop includes instruction on everything from how to hold the instrument to play a few basic chords. New Year’s Eve party: Who says New Year’s Eve must be celebrated at midnight? Families can ring in the holiday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 31 at the Roeland Park Community Center. The event is complete with a balloon drop at noon followed by 12 games of bingo. There is a $15 fee. To learn more call 913-826-3160.
