SM North advances in Championship Showdown, SM East loses opener. SM North edged out Rockhurst in an exciting opening round game of the Championship Showdown public vs. private tournament at SM East Thursday, but the home team couldn’t get past St. James. With the win, SM North advances on the winners’ side of the bracket to face Barstow, which knocked off highly touted Olathe East, in a second round game today at 7 p.m. St. James will face St. John Vianney at 8:30 p.m. in the other winners’ side game. On the consolation side of the bracket, SM East will face SM West at 5:30 p.m., and Olathe East will face Rockhurst at 4 p.m.

Mission resident appointed to state board. Gerad Lozada of Mission has been appointed to the Kansas Board of Examiners in Optometry. Lozada practices with Windmill Eye Associates in Overland Park. He received his optometry degree from University of Houston. The appointment is for a three-year term. [Kansans appointed to state boards – Hays Post] 

Open houses scheduled on bond vote. The Shawnee Mission School District has scheduled open house events to answer questions about the upcoming mail elections on a district bond issue and local option budget continuation. The first will be held at 9 a.m. Jan. 5 in the SM East library. At 6 p.m. Jan. 7 another session will be held in the SM West library. Ballots are expected to be delivered about Jan. 7.

Mission getting new street signs. Mission Public Works Department has begun replacing street signs throughout the city. The program brings the signs into compliance on reflective and size standards.

Canes, Cocoa & a Claus at Shawnee Indian Mission. A partnership between Fairway Parks and Recreation and the Shawnee Indian Mission will bring Santa Claus to the Mission Saturday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Children under 10 can participate in a candy cane hunt and then chat with Santa afterward. Bring a flashlight for the hunt and enjoy cookies and hot cocoa. The event is free and open to the public.

Merriam teenager pleads guilty for attacking woman. An 18-year-old Merriam man on Wednesday pleaded guilty to charges stemming from kidnapping and attempting to rape a 21-year-old escort. Clarence D.
