Mission’s downtown probably didn’t feel like paradise most of the summer during the reconstruction, but Wednesday the Travel Channel showed up on Johnson Drive to film for a future episode of its popular Food Paradise show.
The focus was Werner’s, known for its sausages and other meats prepared on site. Producers filming at the store Wednesday said Werner’s will be featured in a Deli Paradise episode. Producers couldn’t predict when the show will air because the filming is done months in advance.
Werner’s owner Dave Miller said he first thought it was a friend joking with him when he got the call about doing the show. But after he realized the offer was real, he was happy to cooperate. “It not only helps me, it’s good for the whole community,” Miller said. “I’m happy with it.”
Miller, who grew up in German Village in Columbus, Ohio, took over the store in 1995 from Werner Wohlert. Miller is a trained butcher who spent years working as a field engineer, the job that first brought him to Mission. When Werner’s first moved to downtown Mission, several other German businesses were still in operation.
The store originated as Swanson’s, a Swedish store, in Westport in 1898. Wohlert bought the business in 1972 and moved it to Mission. Besides its fresh meats and hand-made sausages, Werner’s now does specialty sandwiches, cheeses, breads and other deli dishes. The outdoor grill has long attracted customers to the corner.
