Northeast Johnson County native Ben Bliss this week made his debut performance at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.

Bliss, who graduated from SM East in 2004, plays the role of Vogelsang in “Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg,” a six-hour epic that started a seven-night run at The Met on Tuesday.

Bliss completed a two-year training program at the Los Angeles Opera in 2013 before beginning the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at The Met.

Kansas City residents will have the chance to see Bliss in Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg Dec. 13 when the performance from New York is broadcast to the Cinemark Palace on the Plaza.

Bliss’s mother Judy says that after he wraps up his stint at The Met, Bliss will be moving to Des Moines, where he will sing the lead in “Abduction from the Seraglio,” a Mozart-penned opera set to debut at the Des Moines Metro Opera this summer. After Des Moines, he will move to England to tour with the Glyndebourne Opera Company.
