Menards is planning to build a new home improvement store in Merriam on the site of the former Kmart building along Shawnee Mission Parkway between Antioch and Eby.

According to a letter sent by Menards to nearby property owners, the plans include demolishing the Kmart building and placing the new store in that spot. Menards earlier this fall filed a request with the city of Merriam asking the city to explore expanding the boundaries of an existing Tax Increment Financing District (TIF). However, no TIF application has yet been by filed by Menards for the property.

The diagram attached to the neighborhood letter describes the property as more than 13 acres and shows the new building sitting approximately where the Kmart building now stands with parking lot remaining between the building and Shawnee Mission Parkway.

Menards has said it is “hoping to build a new store in Merriam,” but otherwise has not confirmed whether it has closed on the property or its specific plans. The Menards drawings also appear to indicate new landscaping on the perimeter.
