Miege, SM East, SM North students among Simone Award finalists; Miege’s Holmes wins coach of the year. A number of northeast Johnson County players are among the finalists for the most prestigious high school football awards in the metro area. The Simone Awards recognize the top performers in various positions from teams on both side of the state line. This year’s finalists include: Miege’s Ryan Willis, who is nominate for the Thomas A. Simone Memorial Award, recognizing the most outstanding player in the metro area, and the Frank Fontana Memorial Award, recognizing the most outstanding small class player; SM East’s Kyle Ball, who is nominated for the Buck Buchanan Award, recognizing the most outstanding big class lineman/linebacker; Miege’s Dawson Downing, who is nominated for the Fontana Memorial Award; and SM North’s Nick Perez, who is nominated for the Otis Taylor Award, recognizing the most outstanding tight end or wide receiver in the metro. As part of the Simone Award finalist announcement, the judges announced that Miege coach Jon Holmes had been named 2014 Time Warner Cable Sports Channel Coach of the Year for Kansas.

SM East, SM North soccer players make All Sunflower List. Several local soccer players were recently honored on this year’s All Sunflower League teams. From SM East, Ari Throckmorton was named a first team forward; Will Fennimore was named a first team midfielder, and Michael Mardykes was named a first team defender. SM East’s Josh Zillner and Derek McClanahan made the Honorable Mention list. From SM North, Kenneth Herron was named the first team goalie. SM North’s Adam Dujakovich and Noah Stevenson made the Honorable Mention list.
SM North NJROTC sweeps meet. The winning ways continued for the SM North NJROTC team. They swept the competition at the recent Kansas/Missouri Athletic NJROTC Challenge. SM North cadets finished first in all three divisions competing against seven other schools. It is the eighth consecutive year the Indians have had a clean sweep in the event.
Roeland Park cave redevelopment idea gets coverage. The plan presented by Roeland Park Mayor Joel Marquardt for redevelopment of the old caves was covered in a story on KCUR.
