If you feel like getting in the holiday spirit, you can make a tour of holiday tree lightings and festivals in northeast Johnson County this week. Treats abound at the events – count on hot chocolate at least.
Here’s the lineup for this week:
Roeland Park – The tree lighting is Tuesday starting at 6 p.m. in Sweany Park on Wells Drive.
Westwood – The mayor’s holiday tree lighting begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday. It will be on the grounds at city hall and include Santa and the Bishop Miege choir.
Prairie Village – The mayor’s holiday tree lighting will be at Corinth Square from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday. The event features Santa, Dancerz Unlimited and the Corinth Elementary choir. Corinth and Village Shops merchants also are holding open houses throughout the day.
Mission – Perhaps the most elaborate of the week’s events is in Mission from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday along Johnson Drive at Woodson. Not only are the usual treats available and an appearance by Santa Claus, but musical fireworks cap the night at 8:15 p.m. Free horse-drawn carriage rides are available all evening and children’s activities complement the Rushton PTA cookie decorating and holiday shoppe. Santa arrives at 6 p.m.
Merriam – The Merriam Marketplace on Merriam Drive is the place to be at 5:30 p.m. Saturday for the mayor’s tree lighting and Santa. Following at 6:30 p.m. is the Downtown Merriam Partnership annual DMP Christmas Dinner for Merriam residents. Tickets (proof of residency required) are available at the Irene B. French Community Center. Merriam residents can donate $1 per ticket or a non-perishable food item.
More information about each of the events is generally available on each city’s website.
