Mission police took one man into custody Sunday morning after surrounding a house in the 5400 block of Reeds and evacuating some neighbors from their homes.

Police were first called to the house at 9:40 a.m. by a neighbor who reported a verbal disturbance was in progress in the home. When they arrived, they determined that three people were in the house: a juvenile male, an adult male and an adult female.

A news release from Mission police described the encounter: “As the officers approached the house, they heard a sound that was consistent with a firearm come from the residence. Officers from Fairway, Merriam, Roeland Park and Westwood assisted at the scene. As a precautionary measure, several houses were temporarily evacuated. Two of the three people in the residence exited the house early on. At 10:41 a.m., the third person left the residence. He was taken into custody without incident.”

Capt. David Moloy said the adult male was the last to leave and he was taken into custody. Police had established a perimeter, Moloy said, and went to the nearby homes to make sure the neighborhood was secure.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office booking log shows that Drew W. Dieterich, 47,  was arrested by Mission police at 10:40 a.m. Sunday in the 5400 block of Reeds Road and charged with aggravated battery/intentional harm. He was logged into jail at 2:40 p.m.
