Three northeast Johnson County students on Wednesday took part in National Letter of Intent signing day, committing to play sports at the college level.
SM East senior Lucas “Tuna” Jones, a 6’8” forward, committed to Eastern Illinois University. Jones started playing on the Lancers varsity squad as a sophomore, and was a key part of the teams run to state in 2012.
“Lucas is a very active, tough, competitive player,” Panthers coach Jay Spoonhour told EIUPanthers.com about his new recruit. “Fundamentally, he has the ball skills to make the right plays, and knows the plays to make. I am really looking forward to having him here.”
Jones and SM East classmate Rilye Fries, who will be swimming at the University of Nebraska next year, both signed their letters of intent in a ceremony in the SM East cafeteria Wednesday afternoon.
Kansas City Christian had a student make a big commitment official as well. Johnny Goodwin on Wednesday signed his letter of intent to join the University of Texas’s tennis team next fall. Goodwin won the state 3-1A individual title as a freshman, took runner up as a sophomore, and then went 30-0 on his way to a second title as a junior this past spring. Texas’s men’s tennis team finished among the top ten in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings this year.
