Annual SM East Homecoming bonfire set for Thursday. If somehow you’re feeling a dearth of Lancer spirit heading into this weekend’s Homecoming game against Leavenworth, the All Sports Booster Club has got the cure. The annual Homecoming Bonfire and Pep Rally is set for 7-9:30 p.m. this Thursday, Oct. 9, on the SM East practice field. In additional to the titular blaze, there will be entertainment from DJ Kirby, the SM East drumline, the Lancer Dancers — as well as fireworks.

Tim Grimes celebrates with Hosmer, Royals after ALDS win. If you haven’t heard, the Kansas City Royals had a good night Sunday. And when they went to celebrate clinching a trip to the ALCS after the game, SM East graduate Tim Grimes got the honor of spraying champagne over the crowd at a Power & Light District bar. Grimes had gotten to watch the game from the Crown Club thanks to a pair of tickets from Royals president Dan Glass. And when the Royals headed to McFadden’s for the party, first baseman Eric Hosmer handed Grimes a bottle of champagne and told him to get in on fun. “‘You’re a part of this as much as we are,’ Hosmer told Grimes, according to the Star’s Sam Mellinger.

Local elementary students participating in Walk/Bike to School day. Be especially careful on the roads during your drive to work Wednesday. Students from several northeast Johnson County schools will be participating in International Walk/Bike to School Day Oct. 8. Corinth began a “Walking School Bus” program Oct. 1 and plans to have students participating in it this Wednesday as well as Oct. 15 and 22. Cure of Ars is planning on participating in Walk/Bike to School day tomorrow as well. And in Roeland Park, the event kicks off at city hall in the morning.

SM East golf teams takes Free State Invitational. SM East’s girls golf team’s streak of excellent performances continued Monday with a first-place finish at the Lawrence Free State Invitational at Lawrence Country Club. Jessica Parker had the best individual outing for the Lancers, finishing tied for third overall with a round of 81 strokes.

2015 Leadership Northeast accepting applications. The Northeast Johnson County Chamber of Commerce is now accepting applications for its 2015 Leadership Northeast class. Leadership Northeast is an educational leadership program focused on identifying and strengthening leadership skills and putting the knowledge into action in the NEJC community. The 2014 class marked 25 years for the program. Leadership Northeast consists of nine all-day sessions from January to May. The program is open to 25 participants. Tuition is $800 for NEJC Chamber members and $900 for prospective members. A LNE alumni and recruitment event will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Chili’s in Merriam.

Roeland Park Community Center Halloween events. On October 18, the Roeland Park Community Center will host the Halloween Spooktacular from 10 a.m. to noon. The event includes a kid costume parade, a pet costume parade and trick-or-treating through the haunted halls of the community center. The cost is $3 per child. On October 25 a Trick-or-cache event will be held at Antioch Park in Merriam 10 a.m. to noon with s’mores, hot dogs and costumes. More information on the event is available here.
