Filing period opens to fill vacant seat on Roeland Park City Council

Roeland Park will have a new city council member after a special election on Dec. 9. Voters in Ward 3 will vote that day for a replacement for councilor Mel Croston, who announced her resignation from the council in September.

Croston’s resignation was effective September 30, which started the clock on the filing period for candidates who wish to run for the council seat. Filing will be open until October 21. The polling place for the in-person election has not been determined yet.

Croston cited personal reasons for her resignation. She is the second Roeland Park city councilor to resign from office this year following the resignation of Robert Myers,Jr. in March. He was replaced by Michael Rhoades in a special election.

Croston was elected to the council in 2013 so her term has more than two and one-half years remaining. It was her first term on the council. In the 2013 election, she defeated Don Rau by a vote of 186-141. Megan England is the other representative on the council for Ward 3. England won her seat by defeating Linda Mau 204-179 in the 2011 election. Mau later ran for mayor, losing to Joel Marquardt in 2013.

Ward 3 is in the southwest corner of the city. Ward maps for Roeland Park can be found here. Information on requirements to file for the office can be found here.
