IT’S LANCER DAY! Parade departs down Mission Road at 2 p.m.

Villagers: Dust off your old SM East letter jacket — or at least find an ugly Christmas sweater in the closet — because the Lancer Day parade is just a few hours away, and this year’s parade theme is holidays.

The bands and floats will start making their way north from SM East down Mission Road to the Village Shops at 2 p.m. Police will have Mission Road closed from 77th Street down through 71st Street from approximately 2 to 2:30 p.m. The Mission Road and 75th Street intersection will be closed during this time, with traffic temporarily rerouted to 77th Street and 79th Street.

The forecast calls for temps in the mid-fifties and a 20 percent chance of rain during parade time.

Each SM East class has been assigned a different holiday, and this year’s floats will reflect those themes. The parade culminates in a prep rally for the football team ahead of tonight’s first home football game of the season against SM South. The Raiders looked sharp in their season opener last week against SM North, taking a 41-0 lead on their way to a 41-12 victory. The Raiders pushed SM East to overtime last season, with the Lancers walking away with a dramatic 28-21 win. SM East’s big win over Gardner-Edgerton in week one propelled it to the top of the Sunflower Football League Blog’s power rankings.

Tonight’s game starts at 7 p.m. at SM South Stadium. The Lancer Gridiron Club’s prep video is below:
