Prairie Village police place new drug collection bin at station

Drug_BinNortheast Johnson County residents looking to safely dispose of prescription medications have a convenient new option at the Prairie Village Police Department.

The department recently installed a new drug collection bin in its lobby, which is accessible 24-hours-a-day.

In the past, area police departments have held drug drop-off events, but the department says it is committed to “preventing prescription drug abuse by providing a safe, environmentally responsible way for citizens to dispose of their expired or unwanted prescription medication” all year long.

The bin will accept prescriptions — including pills, patches and ointments — over-the-counter medications, vitamins, drug samples and medications for pets. Items not fit for disposal in the bin include hydrogen peroxide, inhalers, aerosol can ointments, lotions, liquids, thermometers, needles. Businesses and clinics are asked to refrain from disposing their medications in the bins.

The bin was provided to the Prairie Village police by CVS. Mission installed a similar bin in June.
