Condo fire kills man near SM North. An early morning fire at 7610 W. 59th Terrace in Overland Park today kills a man in his 70s. The fire broke out around 4 a.m. [One person killed in fire at Overland Park condominium — KSHB]

SM East cross country ranked second in the state. SM East’s cross country team is ranked second in the state after the first meet of the season, the Greg Wilson Classic held at Johnson County Community College on Saturday. Sophomore John Arnspiger finished eighth overall in the boys varsity field at 16:22.9. Junior Maddie Wilson finished eleventh overall in the girls field at 14:57.00. Shawnee Mission gets request for drone photography. The Shawnee Mission School District is weighing a request to allow photographer to use a drone to photograph a high school football game. Mission Gateway CID being pushed back. Mission will push back the start date for the Community Improvement District for the Gateway development. The CID sets higher tax rates at retailers in the district. Those taxes would help pay off bonds, but the bonds have never been issued since construction has not started. The CID was supposed to take effect on January 1, 2015, but there will be no new retailers operating by then so no tax collections will be made. The proposed ordinance pushes the start date back to January 2016.

Bishop Miege grad Cozart powers KU to first win of season. 2012 Bishop Miege grad Montell Cozart, who earned the starting quarterback job for the University of Kansas football team this off-season after getting his first starts at the end of last year, went 12-for-24 in the Jayhawks season opener against Southeast Missouri State. He passed for 196 yards and three for three touchdowns with no interceptions. The Jayhawks won 34-28, but allowed Southeast Missouri State to score three touchdowns in the fourth quarter. SM North loses in football debut. SM North’s football team faced a tough week one opponent in SM South, falling 41-12 to the Raiders. SM North faces SM Northwest this Friday in its first home game of the year.
