The 2013 Relay for Life at Franklin Park drew participants from all over Kansas.

Organizers are encouraging cancer survivors, their family and friends to register for the upcoming northeast Johnson County Relay for Life.

This year, the American Cancer Society decided to combine the two Relay for Life events it had held in the area in previous years — a northeast Johnson County event for areas north of Prairie Village, and a Prairie Village-specific event — into a single event, which will be held Saturday, Sept. 13 at Franklin Park.

Funds raised by the event go to research, education, advocacy and services to patients.

In addition to the relay itself, the local ACS chapter has organized two pre-relay fundraising events. There will be a Dine and Donate event at the Corinth Square Salty Iguana Sept. 10. A portion of all food sales from 6 p.m. to close will be donated to Relay for Life. And on Sept. 12, there will be a silent auction at Brighton Gardens in recognition of the birthday of resident Sally Stuart. That event will be 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Brighton Gardens, 7105 Mission Road.

The relay itself will run 4-8 p.m. Sept. 13 and will feature games and entertainment in addition to the walk. The famous luminaria ceremony is slated for 8 p.m.
