Another set of national high school rankings puts SM East among select company.

The Daily Beast’s “Top High Schools 2014” list ranks SM East as the 279th best public high school in the nation. SM North came in at 669 in the rankings.

The Daily Beast used six factors to rank the schools: graduation rates and college acceptance rates (the two categories that are weighted most heavily); college-level courses and exams; percentage of students on free and reduced lunch; and SAT and ACT scores.


In the Kansas City area, the Sumner Academy of Arts and Science in Kansas City, Kan., was named the top local school, coming in at 95 in the overall rankings. Blue Valley High School was second in the metro at 120 overall.

Blue Valley Northwest came in ahead of SM East as well at 244.

SM Northwest was ranked 565, SM South was ranked 664 and SM West was ranked 690.

The list ranks just the top 735 schools in the country. There are more than 25,000 public secondary schools in the United States.
