The day that every NEJC dog has been waiting for is nearly at hand. The newest and closest dog park for Northeast Johnson County has an official name and is expected to be open in the next few weeks.

The dog park, which is in Leawood adjacent to Leawood City Park, will officially be known as “Leawoof Dog Park”. It was among two names that the Leawood Parks and Recreation Advisory Board recommended to the city council for consideration. Leawoof got a unanimous vote from the council, beating out “Canine Creek” as the other name in contention.

The park is planned to have about five acres enclosed by a wooden fence with one acre fenced off as a small dog area within the larger park. A recent update posted by the parks department said no date has been set for opening, but that a late August or early September soft opening is planned.

Parking for the dog area will be within City Park west of Indian Creek. The entry trail leading from city park to the bridge has been poured and the bull-pen area where dogs transition to off-leash is nearly complete, according to the update. Installation of all the other amenities that dogs require are in progress or imminent.
