A break in a gas line in the Johnson Drive construction zone was handled quickly but did cause some minor and short-lived business evacuations late this morning.

Contractors working on the Johnson Drive rebuild in Mission were pulling out the old pavement in front of Mack Hardware and a gas line came up with the pavement and ruptured. Kansas Gas Service was called immediately and closed the line, according to Mission Public Works Director John Belger who was on the scene.

The gas line break occurred shortly before 11 a.m. on the north side of the street just to the east of Beverly. Town Topic was one of the businesses that was evacuated, Belger said, but it was back in business before 11:30 a.m.

The line that was snagged was very shallow and had essentially been part of the pavement, Belger said. It ran south under Johnson Drive to feed a meter that served businesses on the south side of the street. Those businesses were temporarily without gas service this morning, but Kansas Gas crews were working to restore service.

Consolidated Fire Department No. 2 had cleared the scene before 11:30 a.m.
