A lot of high school graduates take it pretty easy the summer before they head off to college.
But not Maddie Roberts.
After walking across the SM East graduation stage this May, Roberts has had a summer jam packed with activity.
First came a trip to New York for the Jimmy Awards — essentially the Tony Awards for high school musicals. Roberts earned her Jimmy Award nomination by winning Outstanding Actress in a Lead Role at the 2014 Blue Star Awards, which honor the best performers in the Kansas City area.
As part of the Jimmy Awards show, Roberts participated in a medley performance with the other nominees. The group spent three days rehearsing before performing at the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway June 30. You can a video of it here — Roberts’ performance starts at about 8:55.
“My group was so fun to be with,” she said. “Everyone picked up everything really fast.”
After returning from New York, Roberts didn’t have any time to relax before playing Maria in the Stage Right Performing Arts production of Westside Story over the Fourth of July weekend at Avila University. And after that, she directed Stage Right’s production of Annie, also at Avila, which wrapped up July 10.
For a few short weeks, though, Roberts says she will be taking it easy — before leaving for Oklahoma City University in mid-August, where she’ll quickly be auditioning for fall plays and musicals.
“I’ve got a mix of emotions — excitement and nervousness at being in a place where I don’t know any one and will be meeting a bunch of new people,” she said.
