The most recent polls show that President Barack Obama’s approval rating is hovering around 41 percent — a number that could be a harbinger of a tough election cycle for Democrats across the nation. Since World War II, the president’s party has lost an average of 5.5 seats in the U.S. Senate when his approval rating was below 50 percent. In 2006, for example, George W. Bush’s approval rating was 38 percent and the Republicans lost six seats in the Senate.
