A group of northeast Johnson County youth have soccer fever — and it’s got nothing to do with the World Cup. In fact, these talented young players are looking to make a statement in their own tournament.

The U-13 OPSC-Monaco team recently won USA Soccer President’s Cup Kansas State Championship and Midwest Regionals to earn a spot in the National Tournament starting July 9. Three members of the team — Carson Jones, Kevin Grinstead and Cooper Holmes — are northeast Johnson County residents who will be heading to eighth grade at Indian Hills this fall.

The team will face the state winners from Pennsylvania, Texas and California over three days in a group format. The two teams that emerge from those three games with the most goals will then face each other in the championship game.

Foo’s Frozen Custard at Ranchmart is holding a send-off party for the team Tuesday during the United States’ World Cup game against Belgium.
