Members of the Village Presbyterian Church community are mourning the loss of Shirley Meneilly, wife of founding pastor Bob Meneilly.
Meneilly passed away Thursday night.
She was an active and well-liked presence in the Village Presbyterian community, serving in many ways as the face of the church to the congregation along with her husband. Bob and Shirley came to Prairie Village before it was incorporated as a city, moving to the area in the late 1940s. They spent their first year in the area going door-to-door visiting area homeowners, and had recruited more than 280 charter members by the time the building was complete and Village Presbyterian held its first Sunday service on Feb. 13, 1949.
The congregation grew swiftly from there. At its peak during the Meneillys’ tenure, Village Presbyterian had just under 8,000 members. Bob retired as senior pastor in 1994. The Meneillys were married 66 years.
A memorial service honoring Shirley is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 17 in the Village Church Sanctuary
