Last year, a talented SM East boys golf team put in a disappointing showing on its home course at Meadowbrook Country Club in Prairie Village as it hosted the state 6A golf tournament — but still managed to capture second place.
This year, even though the Lancers haven’t been as dominant during the regular season, their coach thinks they have a shot of taking the state title for the first time since 2011.
“We’ve had an up and down season,” said Ermanno Ritschl. “If the team is hitting on all cylinders, we should contend for the state title. That’s a big if, though.”
This year’s 6A tournament tees off at 9 a.m. today at Topeka Golf Course, one of the more challenging courses in the state. But that fact plays in the Lancers’ favor, says Ritschl.
“Our past winning history has shown us to win on tough courses. We practice and feel comfortable on tough courses,” he said. “Topeka Country Club is one of those courses. I like our chances there.”
Ritschl said that since the Lancers’ second place finish in the regional tournament last week, the team has been focusing on their short game, and “figuring out where to keep the ball in play and where to miss.”
