The U.S. Supreme Court earlier this month handed down a decision that says prayers at legislative bodies such as city council meetings are legal even if they seem to favor one religion. This week Mayor Steve Schowengerdt of Mission opened the city council meeting with a short prayer and said he intends to do so in the future. Schowengerdt’s prayer mentioned Jesus, so it was clearly Christian in nature. No other city in northeast Johnson County has had a prayer before a public meeting.
You can watch Showengerdt’s prayer below:
What do you think about prayers before meetings like the city council. Are you glad to see a return of prayer and religion to the public sphere or do you believe public governmental meetings should be religion free zones?
