Shawnee Mission Superintendent Jim Hinson, in his Key Communicator Update sent out Monday, said the seven areas include: academics, resources, technology, safety and security, facilities, community/marketing and student/employee well being. “General goals will be established under each of the seven themes,” Hinson related.
“To ensure we are progressing, SMART goals will be identified to support each of the general goals to serve as action items to move the district toward attainment of the goal and completion of the planned initiatives,” the message read. SMART goals are defined as specific, measurable, attainable, results-based and time-bound. “Because the SMART goals are specific and time-bound, they will ensure the district is moving forward and making progress toward completion or attainment of the goal.”
Hinson wrote that since he started on the job in July he has focused on gathering feedback from a broad range of stakeholders on the strengths, challenges and directions for the district. After his first six months on the job, Hinson put technology and security at the top of his agenda. Already, the district has acted on a sweeping technology program to put Apple computers or tablets in the hands of every student and started on a series of security upgrades at a variety of schools.
The district also is working on a plan that would consolidate a number of administrative facilities into a new central administration building. “Long-term planning is essential to the success of our school district and our continued push to ensure the Shawnee Mission School District is great in every aspect of its operations,” Hinson wrote.
