SM East girls swim team takes Wichita Trinity Invitational. SM East’s girls swim team put in a dominating performance over the weekend against teams from all over the state at the Wichita Trinity Invitational at the Wichita Swim Club. SM East walked away with an easy team victory, scoring 469 team points. Second place finisher Emporia scored 274. Fourteen teams from across Kansas competed.

Jazz Night returns to SM East Friday. One of the biggest nights of the year for SM East’s lauded jazz program is just around the corner. Friday will be the 24th annual Jazz Night, featuring performances from both the Blue Knights and Blue Notes bands. Earlier this year, the bands earned 1st division ratings at the Baker University jazz festival, and the Blue Knights received a 1+ rating from the president of the International Jazz Educators Association. The concert Friday will feature selections from Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and more. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for youth. SM East students receive free admission with a school ID. The program starts 7 p.m. Friday at SM East.

Big IX tourney benefitting local schools continues today. A group of local duffers are hitting the links today to benefit area schools. Parents with students at Corinth and Prairie Elementaries tee off this morning and parents with students at Briarwood and Brookwood tee off this afternoon as part of the 4th annual Big IX Golf Tournament at Milburn Country Club. Part of the $125 entry fee for each golfer is going to the schools, with each school expected to take home around $5,000 — and maybe more than $10,000. Belinder, Highlands, Westwood View, Kansas City Christian and Trailwood all had their rounds April 14. The best golfers from the preliminary rounds will play in a championship round May 5.

It’s a bargain hunter’s paradise. Two cities will have city-wide garage sales this week. The Mission city-wide garage sale is scheduled for May 1, 2 and 3. If you would like to register your sale, you can call city hall. Otherwise, show up and shop. Roeland Park also is holding its city-wide sale May 1-4.
