A 30-year veteran of the flower industry has opened a new shop in Prairie Village.
Gregory Banken owned a flower store in southeast Missouri for 28 years before selling it and moving to the Kansas City area last year. After a long search, he has opened Gregory’s Flowers in the strip mall at 89th Street and Roe Avenue.
“I looked for a year since I got here, and this place sort of sought me out,” he said. “I do like the neighborhood atmosphere and that you can pull right up to my store, get what you want and you’re on your way.”
Banken is certified by the American Institute of Floral Designers, a distinction held by less than 1,300 people worldwide and less than 10 in Kansas, he says. He specializes in event work, including parties, bereavement gatherings and weddings.
“I’ve done second generation weddings,” he said. “It’s pretty cool to have done the wedding for the parents and now to do it for their children.”
The store opened its doors in mid-April, but Banken is planning for a grand opening event May 18, during which he plans on bringing one of his two restored grand pianos to the parking lot outside the store and having a musician playing it.
“It depends on the weather,” he said, “but I think that will be fun.”
