City administrator Gerry Vernon’s newsletter in late March said a committee had interviewed four internal candidates for the job. Last week councilors were told that the committee had made a recommendation for a new police chief hire. However, that recommendation was being forwarded to incoming mayor Schowengerdt along with the resumes of other finalists interviewed for the job.
After taking office Wednesday night, Schowengerdt said he is reviewing the resumes and the recommendation and expects to have an appointment in May. The appointment takes council confirmation.
Procedures for department head hiring and dismissal have been an ongoing topic of council discussion for several weeks along with the responsibilities of city administrator and the administrator’s reporting relationship to council and mayor.
