Three SM East students are among the talented group of young Johnson County residents honored with Shooting Stars scholarships from the Arts Council of Johnson County this year. Eighteen students in total earned 2014 scholarships, which range from $1,400 for a first place award to $700 for a second place award. SM East’s winners are:
- James Fink won a 1st place photography scholarship. He was nominated by teacher Adam Finkelston
- Malcolm Gibbs won a 2nd place production and design scholarship. He was nominated by Thomas DeFeo
- Mary Grekstas won a 1st place wind and percussion scholarship. She was nominated by Kim Harrison
To be eligible for the scholarships, students must be Johnson County residents and graduating seniors who are nominated by one of their teachers. Since its inception, Shooting Stars has recognized 1,000 students, and given more than $250,000 in scholarships and $65,000 in teacher honorariums.
