Indian Hills student Ellie Green heads to state spelling bee after winning Johnson County

Indian Hills Middle School will be represented at the state Sunflower Spelling Bee this week. Ellie Green, an eighth-grader at the school, won first place at the Johnson County Spelling Bee in February.

Ellie claimed the county title by spelling the work “lemma” correctly. More than 80 elementary and middle school students participated in the county bee. Indian Woods Middle School eighth-grader Cora Selzer was one of the top eight contestants and also earned a place at the state bee. The state competition will be held Saturday at Fort Hays State University.

The winner of the state competition advances to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
