New poll: Should Shawnee Mission consider keeping schools open on MLK day?

494px-Martin_Luther_King_Jr_NYWTSIt’s Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, and for students and teachers in the Shawnee Mission School District, as in the vast majority of the rest of the country, that means no classes.

But many people argue that students may be better served if districts were to keep schools open on MLK day, using it as an opportunity to teach lessons on the importance of the Civil Rights movement. Proponents of the idea argue that with classes canceled, students may not be exposed to information about why the holiday was instituted in the first place.
