Kids: It’s time to be on your absolute best behavior possible. Because your chance to meet the man who dishes out Christmas gifts in person is right around the corner — and you’d better believe he’s paying attention to all that naughtiness.

The holiday season gets an official start in Prairie Village Thursday with the annual Mayor’s Tree Lighting ceremony at Corinth Square. The event, which will feature performances by the Indian Hills Middle School Choir and Dancerz Unlimited, will begin at 6 p.m. with the arrival of Santa and the lighting of the tree scheduled sometime before 7 p.m.

The tree lighting takes place at the southwest corner of the main Corinth Square building, between the Wild Bird Center and Wooten Liquors.

Four area restaurants — Tavern in the Village, SPIN!, Johnny’s Tavern, the Salty Iguana — have agreed to donate a portion of their sales Thursday to the Mayor’s Holiday Tree Fund, which goes to help provide financial assistance to families who may need help with things like paying utility bills.

Thursday is also the holiday open house at both the Village Shops and Corinth Square, with a 20 percent discount available at select retailers. For a list of all the Corinth and Village merchants offering specials Thursday, click here.
