A group of third graders from Prairie Elementary this week made a small sacrifice of their own to honor the country’s veterans: The gave away their Halloween candy.
Boy Scout Pack 3291, Den 6, gathered on Tuesday at Village Presbyterian to pack up their candy as well as that donated by some of their classmates as part of an initiative organized by Operation Gratitude. The scouts wrote letters to veterans thanking them for their service, and will be sending the notes as well as the candy to active soldiers in combat zones.
“This was a great activity for the kids to learn about the sacrifices soldiers and their families make for our freedom,” said Prairie mom Tara Brown Brant. “The kids were not all that excited about giving up their candy, but learned the lesson of sacrifices that are made for freedom.”
