SM North will add three new inductees to its Hall of Fame in early 2014. The three new members are Dr. Mark Balderston, John Parker and Bob Stauffer. They will be inducted at halftime of the boys basketball game on Feb. 14.
Dr. Balderston of the Class of 1972, has been a team doctor at SM North for more than 30 years and has helped raise thousands of dollars by giving sports physicals as a fundraiser for the school. He played varsity basketball, ran track and was a defensive back and wide receiver on the 1971 state championship football team. He was a member of the 1971 and 1972 Sunflower League Champion medley relay team.
John Parker played at SM North from 1951 to 1953. He was quarterback on the top ranked football team for two years and starting guard on the basketball team for two years as well as state champion in the javelin in 1953. He went on to play basketball at KU and was co-captain of the 1957 team that lost to North Carolina in the national championship game.
Bob Stauffer was a coach from 1966 to 1997. He was assistant football coach from 1966 to 1978 with four state championship teams. He was head football coach from 1979 to 1984 and was ranked third in the metro in 1984 with a 7-1 record.
As assistant track coach from 1969 to 1997, Stauffer coached five state champions in boys high jump and two in long jump; one each for girls high jump and long jump; a team state championship in 1972 and league champions in 1972 and 1992.
