Four members of SM East’s girls tennis team are in Maize, Kansas, today defending the school’s state 6A tennis title.

Senior Olivia Sneed and junior Elizabeth Barnickel are representing the Lancers in singles play, and the duo of junior Stephanie Wilcox and sophomore Aidan Epstein will represent SM East in doubles.

Sneed, who comes into state play undefeated at 22-0, and Barnickel, 22-2, are the top seeded players to come out of their regionals bracket. Wilcox and Epstein finished second in their regionals competition.

The Lancers have strong momentum heading into their title defense, having won both the Sunflower League and 6A regionals team titles in the past two weeks. And Sneed — who is playing her first season for the Lancers — received special recognition Wednesday from 41 Action News, which named her Hy-Vee Player of the Week:

Should the Lancers take the state title again, it would mark their third consecutive championship, and their fourth in six years.

State play begins at 11:30 a.m. today, with finals rounds scheduled for noon Saturday.
