And hundreds of parents and students from throughout the Kansas City area milled about Shawnee Mission East’s auxiliary gym Wednesday for the 51st Annual College Clinic, SM North junior Lisa Lopez and her mother Elizabeth Median made a stop near the Johnson County Community College information table.

Lopez signed a register for more information. And then it was time to keep the search moving. She wanted to talk to the University of Kansas’s representatives as well. And a few other schools were likely to catch her eye on the way there.

“I’m a junior, so I’ve got to start looking,” said Lopez.

As the oldest child in her family, her college search is new ground not only to her, but to her mother as well.

Lopez says she wants a school with a good psychology program and good financial aid options, and a campus that doesn’t feel too big and is welcoming.

Medina’s list of desirable qualities is shorter — and not uncommon for parents.

“I would prefer her to stay close to home,” she said. “But as long as she’s happy and finds a place she feels safe — it will be her first time living away from home – that’s what matters to me.”

More than 200 colleges and universities had representatives on hand for the annual event — the largest college clinic in the metro area — which was in its 51st year.

My God do these representatives of the University of Wisconsin — Madison seem like good people. What a fantastic school it must be! (Jay Senter '01)
My Lord! What an inviting group of representatives the University of Wisconsin — Madison has assembled! They emit an aura of intelligence and industriousness…and yet seem wholly approachable. What a fantastic school it must be! (Caption authored by Jay Senter, UW ’01)
